Derek Comes to Netflix

On May 21st, Netflix announced that it will premiere Derek on September 12th. At the launch, all seven episodes will be available and will be accessible to Netflix members in the U.S., Canada, Ireland, Latin America, Brasil, and the Nordics. Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix, commented: “Ricky Gervais is one of the most distinctive comedy voices of his generation. With ‘Derek’, Ricky takes on new territory and mixes comedy with drama that is sometimes touching and sometimes heartbreaking. We are proud to partner with Ricky to present this unique and wonderful series to our members.”

Derek Noakes, performed by Ricky Gervais

The show will add to Netflix’s growing list of exclusive content, including the hugely successful House of Cards, of which Gervais is a huge fan, and Arrested Development. Although Derek is not a Netflix production, it won’t be shown anywhere else in the above countries for an undisclosed period of time. Netflix’s streaming service accounts for 32.3% of all downstream internet traffic in the US/Canada, almost double that of nearest rival, YouTube. Netflix is already competing with the biggest TV broadcasters and many predict that online streaming service will soon replace the traditional cable TV. Derek coming to Netflix is clearly a forward-thinking and progressive decision and one that leads the way in what is more and more likely to be the future of TV broadcasting - the internet.

So what is ‘Derek’? Well, if you don’t know, you've certainly come to the right place. Derek is a bittersweet comedy-drama about a group of outsiders living on society’s margins. Derek follows Derek Noakes (Gervais), a tender, innocent man whose love for his job at a retirement home shines through.  Derek cares deeply for the home’s residents, because they are kind and funny and tell him stories of what life used to be like. Working alongside Derek is Dougie (Karl Pilkington), who is one of life’s unlucky individuals; Kev (David Earl), a loveable train wreck; and Hannah (Kerry Godliman), a care worker in the home and Derek’s best friend. She is smart, witty and hard-working, but unlucky in love, and, like Derek, always puts other people first.

For those that have been following me on Twitter (@tadpole_hitler) or Ricky (@rickygervais), you will have been teased about Derek for a good six months, but don’t worry, the wait will soon be over!

Derek by Catherine Giggal

"One of the best, most moving pieces of televised material that I have ever seen"

I am sad to see such as wonderful series come to an end! “Derek”, written by the multi-talented Ricky Gervais, is about a kind, caring man called ‘Derek’, who voluntarily works in Broadhill, a retirement home that is run by Hannah (Kerry Godliman). The series itself ran over 6 episodes, which were all as poignant, humorous, and uplifting as each other. I found the acting phenomenal, with Gervais, Godliman, Pilkington, Earl, as well as the rest of the remarkable cast, who worked in unison to create a programme which was unique, inspiring, as well as highly believable. As the series progressed, I felt that I somehow connected to the characters themselves, where they all had an individual personality, which made them stand out significantly, and initially made the programme highly interesting to watch.

'Derek' by Ricky Gervais

Furthermore, in Episode 5, I could not halt my laughter when Derek, Kev, as well as Dougie, formed a tribute band to Duran Duran. I found it incredibly heart-warming when the retirees were laughing, as well as when Derek said “It makes me happy” (referring to when the old people laughed). Also, another highlight of the series was in episode 6, where Derek viewed the viral sensation ‘Baby Monkey’, which made me smile, as this was also one of my favourite videos, due to the humorous, yet innocent nature of the online hit. It had brought back a positive memory, and therefore made me laugh simultaneously.

In conclusion, I am ecstatic at the fact that ‘Derek’ has been green lighted for a second series! I know it will be as fantastic as the first one, and I cannot wait to view it! Well done to Gervais, as well as every other individual who was involved in the creation of this outstanding TV series. Roll on series 2!

Derek Changed My Life by Astrid

Hello, my name is Astrid, I'm 32 and I live in Belgium (French is my mother tongue so I apologise in advance for my grammar mistakes!).

A lovely Tadpole asked me if I would like to share my first experience as a volunteer in a care home for the elderly and how Derek inspired me to do so. It’s my pleasure to share it with you. I hope it's not to too boring.

I can really say that Derek has changed my life. I don't say that pompously, I just say it because that's the humble truth.

I saw the pilot episode last year and, like many of you, I fell in love with Derek and with Broad Hill. Last December, I lost my job as a graphic designer in a newspaper and I was totally paralysed by anxiety and what’s going to happen next.

My professional road seems to me like a mess, with no university path, just one little diploma in art school and various experience. I thought that nobody would want me because I do not enter in any box. Lack of experience in graphic design (and someone told me I was too old!), not qualified for paperwork, I’m an awful seller and crowds give me panic attacks. I was seeing myself like a lost cause.

I’ve tried to find another job in graphic design but I failed. And something in me was screaming: this is not your place! This is not what you want for the long term! I was completely torn and lost.

And then Derek came back.

After watching the
six new episodes several times, the answer was in front of me. It helped me to see how I could change my situation. It was the click I was waiting for, for years.

Mr Tadpole Hitler has created a great website dedicated to Derek and he ran a competition: say in 100 words why you love Derek series one. And Ricky made me the happiest girl in the world by choosing my entry as one of the seven runners-up - one of the best moments of my life!

After that, the decision was made. First, I’ll be a volunteer in a care home for the elderly.
Second, I will work in a care home as, well, I don’t know what yet - but I will find it!

I've contacted an organisation who arrange volunteering and it took several weeks before I start. I met the home staff first to discuss my motivations and why I choose to be a volunteer and fortunately, everything went well. And my first experience was absolutely great.

It was on the 16th of May and I was a bit scared of course, because I've never really been so close to old people. I was afraid of being clumsy or not knowing what to do or not to be able to manage my emotions. The home is quite big, 105 residents, and 80% of them are disoriented or at an advanced stage of Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. Some don't leave their beds and some are terribly affected by severe CVA. But all the staff of this home are fantastic and supportive.

I was impressed to see so many people in one go, close to the end of their life and so weak.
But you can see in their eyes and smiles that there’s more life than you can imagine.

I've tried not to be overwhelmed by my emotions and to do what I had to do. That’s the hardest part for me, find the balance between having empathy and keeping my cool because I know I take the risk of dissolving into tears: some are in a very sad situation. My smiling and caring nature came back quickly and I've had one of the most amazing afternoons of my life. There was a birthday party with a choral (no “Gettin' Jiggy with it” unfortunately - haha) and a little lunch. I've seen a Lady who is 100 year old and who’s still beautiful.

I’ve talked a little with some of them, serving coffee and smiles. One Lady told me “Thank you for your kindness Miss”.  At this second, I knew I've won my golden ticket.  Like Ricky said: 'Kindness is the only thing that matters.'

It was very moving for me to know that I was at the right place, for the first time of my life.
I was in my element. Finally. A quote said by Derek was always with me: I likes ’em being happy... They ain't got long so every minute is important.'’ This is so true.

The volunteers I've met are fantastic people too, funny and full of life. In a few hours, they taught me a lot and I can’t wait to see them again.

And now, it’s time for the big step: next week, I'll register in a school to study the job of 'auxiliary nurse for elderly.' That was a tough decision because I have to go back to school in September for two years but I think I've found my way - my vocation. Actually, I can't imagine doing anything else.

I need to help the elderly because I've always loved them; I love their company, taking care of them and giving them all I have in me. I know I can’t save them, but I know I can give some sweetness.

I don't know why I didn't choose this way earlier. Maybe I wasn't ready, I don't know. I guess everything arrives at the right moment. Derek was the start button of, I'm certain, a very rich experience for me. And my Love, my friends and my family give me incredible support.

Ricky, your work has an immensely positive impact on my life and I hope you'll continue to make us laugh and cry for many, many years. But most of all, I hope you'll continue to make us think.

Thank you for everything Ricky, deep from my heart. Whatever close-minded people might think, you are someone rare with a big heart because only someone with a heart bigger than earth could create characters like Derek, Hannah, Dougie, Kev and my favourite - the lovely Lizzie, with such sincerity and sensibility.

I treasure my photograph of Derek that you've signed. I see it as the symbol of a new story.

Maybe I’ll become a good care worker in two years?… I've crossed my fingers. I know it’s going to be tough, I know I’ll have to get through difficult moments and I’m afraid to fail, but I’ll do it and I’m absolutely sure it's worth it. I have a lot to learn and I know I will have to deal with my emotions.

I should not be afraid to fail but be afraid not to try, right? And I will. With all the kindness and respect I can give to these lovely and precious people.

I can’t wait to start.
Thank you for reading me.

Take care of yourselves and of the ones you love.

#kindnessismagic

Posteritty Art Competition Winners Announced

With two amazing prizes up for grabs thanks to our friends at Posteritty  we've had a staggering 2,876 entries in our latest Derek competition!

The star prize is a limited edition minimalist print of Derek, Dougie and Kev signed by Ricky Gervais, Karl Pilkington and David Earl.

Star Prize - limited edition print signed by Ricky, Karl and David

The runners-up prize is the ‘crabs’ print by Posteritty, signed by Ricky Gervais, Karl Pilkington, David Earl, Kerry Godliman and Brett Goldstein!

'Crabs' print, runners-up prize

These prizes have generated a huge amount of interest and the two winners have really got themselves something special. A huge thank you must go to Posteritty for donated the prizes, and to Ricky Gervais for arranging them to be signed by the cast of Derek.

So how could you win them? I asked followers of Tadpole Hitler to tell me their favourite scene from Derek, and the reason why in under 100 words.

Ricky Gervais has read the entries and today I have received the names of the two lucky winners. So without further ado, it’s time to announce them.

The winner of the exclusive, signed ‘Derek, Dougie and Kev’ print is Reid Mansell. His favourite scene from the show is Derek and his father sitting together for the first time, and here is why:

“My dad, a wonderful father, left when I was seven. I never knew why. I'd played that scene in my mind my entire life. What would I say? How would I feel? Would the sound of his voice melt the years and pain away? Derek's anger, resistance...battling an underlying longing to connect.

“I was transfixed. Watching, begging Derek to accept him, forgive him while completely understanding the wall Derek had built. The wall won, his father walked away.

“When the car stopped I wept. I would have done the same thing. My dad died in 1992, I never had the chance.”

Thank you for sharing that with us Reid – a deserved winner. Ricky was looking for honesty, sincerity and a personal viewpoint, and he certainly felt that with your entry.

The runner-up in the competition, who will be sent the ‘crab’ print is Craig Wing, whose favourite scene was Kev’s final monologue:

"In an otherwise perfect series I'd often questioned Kev's behaviours/motives, thinking him too big a caricature to hold a place in my fanboy-heart. His final monologue however (episode-6), gave Kev context, proving me wrong. His confession to "failing because he never tried" reflected my own life. I re-watched the series, seeing depth and subtleties in Kev I'd initially missed; testimony to both a layered script and performance. It's my favourite scene because through Kev I saw myself. I'd become content with unhappiness and stuck in a rut. I'm yet to write "twat" on a crab though, so there's still hope."

Congratulations Craig and a big thank you to everybody who entered the competition. I know Ricky found it incredibly difficult to choose the winners, but like with every competition, a decision has to be made.

A new competition will be launching tomorrow in association with Posteritty and Ricky Gervais on equalitystreet.info. Make sure you follow @EqualityStreet on Twitter for updates on how to win one of three exclusive prizes!
